11 Plus in Essex: The Complete CSSE Parent Guide (2027 Entry)
If you're starting the 11+ in Essex, almost everything routes through four letters: CSSE. Ten grammar and selective schools share one test, set and marked by the schools themselves rather than a national exam board. This guide walks a parent through the whole picture for September 2027 entry — which schools are involved, the one school that runs its own separate test, the dates that actually matter, the difference between "registering" and "applying," and the score your child needs.
Quick summary — Essex 11+, 2027 entry
If you do nothing else this week:
- Diarise your local authority's Common Application Form deadline (31 October 2026 for Essex and Southend) — missing it is the single most common own goal.
- Decide early whether Chelmsford County High School for Girls is on your list; its test and registration run months ahead of CSSE and on a different system.
- Read the admissions policy of each specific school you're targeting — the consortium's 303 minimum is only the floor.
What is CSSE?
CSSE stands for the Consortium of Selective Schools in Essex — the shared English and Maths 11+ test used by ten Essex grammar and selective schools. It was formed in 1993 as a voluntary association so that families applying to more than one Essex selective school would only have to sit one test instead of several. The consortium's own staff and member schools design, sit and mark the papers — there is no GL Assessment, no CEM, no outside provider involved in the core test. One registration with CSSE puts your child in the running for all ten member schools at once.
That independence is why generic "11+ exam board" advice often doesn't fit Essex. The papers are built around Key Stage 2 of the National Curriculum in English and Maths, and — unlike the four-paper GL model used in Kent or Buckinghamshire — there is no standalone Verbal Reasoning or Non-Verbal Reasoning paper in the CSSE test.
The ten CSSE schools
All ten use the same test and the same one-day sitting. Seven are selective grammar schools; three admit a smaller block of selective places alongside their wider intake.
| School | Type | 2027 places (PAN) |
|---|---|---|
| Colchester Royal Grammar School | Boys' grammar (super-selective) | 128 |
| Colchester County High School for Girls | Girls' grammar | 192 |
| King Edward VI Grammar School, Chelmsford | Boys' grammar | 150 |
| Southend High School for Boys | Boys' grammar | 180 |
| Southend High School for Girls | Girls' grammar | 224 |
| Westcliff High School for Boys | Boys' grammar | 185 |
| Westcliff High School for Girls | Girls' grammar | 192 |
| Shoeburyness High School | Mixed comprehensive with selective places | 28 selective |
| St Bernard's High School | Catholic bi-lateral (girls) — needs the school's own SIF | 30 selective |
| St Thomas More High School for Boys | Catholic bi-lateral — needs the school's own SIF | 30 selective |
Published admission numbers are from the CSSE Information Guide for 2027 Entry. St Bernard's and St Thomas More require their own Supplementary Information Form in addition to the CSSE registration and your council application.

Registering vs applying — they are not the same thing
This catches families out every year, so it's worth being blunt about it.
- The CSSE registration form only books the test. It tells the consortium your child's legal name, date of birth, home address and nominated test centre. It is not an application to any school.
- The application is your local authority's secondary Common Application Form (CAF). You must name each CSSE school you want as a preference on that form, in genuine order of preference, and return it to your home council by 31 October 2026. Essex families apply through Essex County Council; Southend families through Southend-on-Sea Borough Council; families living elsewhere use their own council's form even for Essex schools.
- Use your true order of preference. Ranking a CSSE school lower to "play the system" cannot help you — the council offers the highest-ranked school whose criteria your child meets, and only one place is offered.
Get the personal details identical on both forms. If the name or date of birth differs, the council may not be able to match your child's test result to the application.
What the CSSE test actually contains
Two papers, sat on the same day at your nominated CSSE school:
- English — 60 minutes, plus 10 minutes' additional reading time. A comprehension section (retrieval, inference and vocabulary questions with written answers) and a continuous writing task assessed on vocabulary, spelling, punctuation, grammar and structure.
- Maths — 60 minutes. Key Stage 2 content: number and place value, the four operations, fractions, decimals and percentages, ratio and proportion, measurement, geometry and basic statistics. Answers are worked and written — not chosen from four options — so method matters.
Calculators, dictionaries, highlighter pens and smartwatches are not allowed. Children bring only a pen, pencil, ruler and eraser, and do not wear school uniform. Free familiarisation papers are on the CSSE website; commercial practice books are "similar level" but not the CSSE format.

How places are decided
Each paper is marked, then converted to a standardised score that is adjusted for your child's age in months, so summer-born children are not disadvantaged. English and Maths are weighted equally (50% each) to produce one overall standardised score. Your results email shows the raw score for each subject and the overall standardised score.

If Essex grammar doesn't work out
Essex has no state-grammar "13+" route — there is no second bite through the CSSE schools two years later. If a place doesn't come through, the realistic alternatives are:
- Waiting lists and appeals — every refused applicant gets appeal information with the March offer. Panels are independent and success rates are low, but the guidance sheet helps you judge whether your child was close.
- Independent senior schools — many Essex families apply here in parallel, at 11+ or later at 13+ via the ISEB Common Pre-Test and Common Entrance or a school's own exam.
- A strong non-selective secondary plus a considered move at sixth form, where selective and independent schools open up again.

Parent advice
Treat the council application as the real deadline. The test is the visible milestone, but a late or incomplete Common Application Form can undo a good result. Put 31 October 2026 in your calendar now, with a reminder two weeks before.
Prepare for English and Maths depth, not reasoning puzzles. Because CSSE has no VR or NVR paper, time spent on shape-pattern and letter-code workbooks is lower value here than secure arithmetic, problem-solving and genuine writing practice.
Visit before you rank. CSSE schools run open events for Year 5 families in the summer term. A single-sex boys' grammar in Colchester and a mixed selective intake in Southend are very different environments; the ranking on your CAF should reflect where your child will thrive, not just league-table position.
Frequently asked questions
What is the 11 plus exam in Essex?
For most Essex grammar schools it is the CSSE test — a shared English and Maths exam set and marked by the Consortium of Selective Schools in Essex, used by ten schools, sat on one day in September of Year 6. One CSSE registration covers all ten. Chelmsford County High School for Girls is the main exception: it runs its own separate FSCE test and is not part of CSSE.
When is the Essex CSSE 11+ exam for 2027 entry?
Saturday 19 September 2026, with a reserve date of Tuesday 29 September 2026 for religious observance or verified illness only. CSSE registration ran 12 May – 19 June 2026. Results are emailed after close of business on 12 October 2026. The separate Chelmsford County High test for the same entry year was on 3 September 2026.
How many schools are in the CSSE consortium?
Ten: Colchester Royal Grammar School, Colchester County High School for Girls, King Edward VI Grammar School (Chelmsford), Southend High School for Boys, Southend High School for Girls, Westcliff High School for Boys and Westcliff High School for Girls, plus Shoeburyness High School, St Bernard's High School and St Thomas More High School for Boys, which each admit a smaller number of selective places through the test.
What score do you need to pass the CSSE 11+?
CSSE publishes one consortium-wide minimum: no offer is made below a total standardised score of 303 (outside successful appeals and special-consideration places). Individual schools then rank qualifying applicants, so the effective score for a specific school — especially the Colchester and Chelmsford grammars — is usually well above 303 and changes each year. Check each school's admissions policy and the CSSE guidance sheet published on results day.
Is registering for the CSSE test the same as applying to the schools?
No. The CSSE registration form only books your child a place to sit the test. To apply for a school place you must name the school as a preference on your home local authority's secondary Common Application Form, which is separate and due by 31 October 2026 for 2027 entry.
Does the Essex 11+ test verbal or non-verbal reasoning?
Not as separate papers. The CSSE test is English and Maths only, based on Key Stage 2 of the National Curriculum. Reasoning skills still help — comprehension inference and multi-step maths problems reward clear thinking — but there is no standalone VR or NVR paper to prepare for.
