How to Practise for the 11+: The Study Techniques That Actually Work
Here is the uncomfortable part: most 11+ practice at home is the kind that feels productive and does the least. Re-reading the answer explanation, highlighting the key rule, working through a stack of similar questions on a Saturday morning — it all feels like effort, and it all under-delivers. The techniques that genuinely move scores tend to feel harder in the moment. This guide sets out what the research on learning actually supports, translated into things you can do with a ten-year-old at the kitchen table.

- Swap "read the explanation again" for "close the book and tell me how it works".
- Cut session length and raise session frequency — three 25-minute sessions beat one 90-minute one.

What the research actually says
In 2013 a team of cognitive and educational psychologists reviewed the evidence on ten common study techniques and rated each for "utility" — how reliably it helps, across different ages, subjects and situations. The findings are strikingly consistent, and they run against how most people revise.
- High utility: practice testing (retrieving information from memory) and distributed practice (spreading study over time rather than massing it).
- Moderate utility: interleaved practice (mixing problem types) and self-explanation / elaborative interrogation (asking and answering "why").
- Low utility for most learners: re-reading, highlighting or underlining, summarising, and mnemonic or imagery tricks — techniques students lean on precisely because they feel easy.
1. Retrieval practice: the single biggest lever
Retrieval practice means getting the answer out of memory rather than putting it back in by re-reading. Children who are tested on material remember substantially more of it a week later than children who spend the same time re-studying it — and the gap widens the longer the delay before the real exam.
How to do it at home
- Become the teacher. After a topic, close everything and have your child explain it to you — or to a sibling, a toy, the dog. Gaps in the explanation are exactly the gaps to work on.
- Use past papers as practice, not just assessment. A paper worked through, marked, and then re-attempted from memory a few days later is worth more than three fresh papers done once.
- Quick verbal quizzing. Five questions in the car on the way to school — a definition, a times table, "what's the rule for apostrophes of possession" — is retrieval, and it costs nothing.
- Flashcards done properly: answer out loud before flipping the card, every time. A card glanced at is a card re-read.

2. Space it out: little and often beats cramming
The same total amount of practice produces more durable learning when it is spread across many short sessions than when it is packed into a few long ones. Twenty to forty minutes on most days beats a three-hour block every Saturday — and it is far kinder on a ten-year-old's attention and morale.
- Short and frequent. Aim for one focused subject per session; stop before your child is fried, not after.
- Come back to old topics. Don't treat a topic as "done" once it's covered. Revisit it a week later, then a month later — the act of recalling something you half-forgot is where the gain is.
- Protect against burnout. Spacing is also the antidote to the exponential energy slump that comes from front-loading effort. Consistency over months, not intensity over weekends.
3. Mix it up: interleaving
Doing twenty ratio questions in a row lets a child switch off the hardest part — working out what kind of problem this is — because they already know. Real papers don't announce the topic. Interleaving — mixing question types within a session — forces that decision every time, which is the skill the exam tests.
- In maths, mix a few arithmetic, a few word problems, a few geometry rather than blocking by topic.
- In reasoning, alternate question types instead of doing a page of one.
- Expect accuracy to dip during interleaved practice compared with blocked practice — that's normal, and performance on a later mixed test is what improves.
Blocked practice still has a place when a child is first learning a method. Switch to interleaving once the method is secure.
4. Make them explain "why"
Self-explanation — having the child say why an answer is right, or how a new fact connects to something they already know — deepens understanding beyond just getting the answer. It turns a right answer into a transferable rule.
- "You got it — now tell me why the other three options are wrong."
- "What's the rule here, in your own words? Where else would it apply?"
- For comprehension: "Which words in the text tell you that?" — evidence-based inference is the same skill the paper rewards.
5. Always close the loop with feedback
Retrieval practice works best with corrective feedback. A wrong answer left unexamined can even cement the wrong method. The review matters as much as the practice:
- Mark the set together, soon after doing it.
- For each mistake, identify the rule or step that failed — not just the right answer. Was it unknown, misread, rushed, or a method error?
- Log recurring mistake types. Three careless subtraction slips in a week is a pattern to train, not three unlucky one-offs.
- Re-attempt the missed questions from scratch a few days later.

What to stop doing
- Re-reading answer explanations until they feel familiar. Familiar is not the same as learned.
- Highlighting and copying out. Both feel like studying and mostly produce neater pages.
- Doing easy questions to feel good. Practice should sit at the edge of what your child can currently do.
- Long unbroken sessions. Past roughly 30–45 minutes, a ten-year-old's return on the next hour is small.
- Buying every workbook in the shop. A smaller set used with retrieval and spacing beats a large set done once.

- Once a fortnight: a timed section under quiet conditions, to build stamina and exam pacing.
- Every session: the child explains at least one answer in their own words.

Parent advice
Judge practice by the review, not the score. A 60% paper that is thoroughly understood afterwards is worth more than an 80% paper that isn't looked at.
Expect the effective methods to feel worse. Retrieval and interleaving produce more errors in the moment and less of a warm glow. That is the sign they are working, not that something is wrong.
Keep sessions short enough to end on a good note. A child who stops while still engaged comes back willingly. A child worked to exhaustion resists the next session, and resistance costs more than the extra ten minutes gained.
