Verbal vs Non-Verbal Reasoning in the 11+: The Real Difference (and Which Exams Test Each)

Parents often hear "verbal reasoning" and "non-verbal reasoning" as a single lump — the mysterious extra papers beyond English and Maths. They're not the same thing, they don't reward the same preparation, and a child can be genuinely strong at one and struggle with the other. This guide sets them side by side: what each measures, the question types with examples you can try now, which exams actually include them, and how to split preparation time.

What each one actually measures

Both VR and NVR test the same underlying habit: spotting a rule or relationship and applying it consistently, quickly, without being thrown by surface detail. Where they diverge is the material the rule is hidden in.

Because the raw material differs, the two are genuinely separable abilities. It is common for a bookish child to fly through VR and find NVR frustrating, or for a puzzle-loving child to do the reverse.

Verbal reasoning: the main question types

Word logic — analogies and odd-one-out

Finger is to Hand as Toe is to…? (Foot / Sock / Leg / Nail)
Answer: Foot
Why: a finger is part of a hand, so a toe is part of a foot — the "is a part of" relationship, not just any leg-related word.
Which is the odd one out? oak, pine, elm, rose, birch
Answer: rose
Why: oak, pine, elm and birch are trees; a rose is a shrub/flower.

Letter and number sequences

What comes next? C, F, I, L, ?
Answer: O
Why: each letter jumps forward three places in the alphabet (C→F→I→L→O).

Codes and letter manipulation

If CAT is written in code as DBU, how is DOG written?
Answer: EPH
Why: each letter moves forward one place (C→D, A→B, T→U), so D→E, O→P, G→H.

Short logic puzzles

A few sentences of information — who sits where, who is taller — with a question that requires combining the clues. These reward careful reading and, often, a quick sketch.

Non-verbal reasoning: the main question types

Series — what comes next

A row of figures changing by a consistent rule; pick the next in the sequence. The rule is usually a combination of rotation, a change in the number of elements, a change in shading, and a change in size.

Matrices — complete the grid

A 2×2 or 3×3 grid with one cell blank. The pattern runs across rows and down columns; the answer must satisfy both directions at once.

Odd one out — find the figure that breaks the rule

Five figures share a hidden rule (for example, "number of sides equals number of dots"); one doesn't. The skill is testing each candidate rule against every figure, not spotting the one that merely looks different.

Spatial — nets, folding, rotation and reflection

Which cube matches this net; which option is this shape rotated 90°; which is a true mirror image. These lean most heavily on mental manipulation and are where systematic checking beats instinct.

The NVR breakthrough: most non-verbal questions are built from a short, fixed list of transformations — rotation, reflection, size, quantity, shading, and adding or removing a feature. A child who learns to run down that checklist for every question stops guessing by overall appearance and starts scoring reliably. This is why NVR is a learnable test skill, not a fixed talent.

This is the single most important thing to establish before planning any reasoning practice.

GL Assessment's model is four papers — English, Maths, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning — and each region chooses which to use and how to weight them. The Kent Test, for instance, combines English, Maths and both reasoning types, with a short writing task that is only reviewed if a result goes to a headteacher panel. Essex is the clearest contrast: the CSSE test is English and Maths only, so a CSSE-only family should not be buying NVR workbooks. The shared technique across both: say the rule before answering. "Each letter goes forward three" or "the shape rotates 90° clockwise and loses a dot" is the actual skill being tested — a child who can articulate the rule has usually got the question right, and a child who can't is usually guessing.

Parent advice

Check the format first, always. The most wasted hours in 11+ prep are reasoning workbooks bought for an exam that doesn't test reasoning. Confirm your target exam's papers before spending anything.

Diagnose, then split time by need. Do one short VR set and one short NVR set early on. If one is clearly weaker, weight practice toward it — but keep both ticking over, because they don't cross-train.

Protect English and Maths. Even where reasoning is tested, it sits on top of core literacy and numeracy. Vocabulary work doubles as VR and English preparation; arithmetic fluency doubles as Maths and the number-based VR questions.

What is the difference between verbal and non-verbal reasoning?

Both test rule-based logical thinking under time pressure, with different raw material. Verbal reasoning uses words and letters — analogies, odd-one-out, sequences, codes, logic puzzles — and depends on vocabulary. Non-verbal reasoning uses shapes and patterns — matrices, series, rotations, reflections, nets — and depends on spatial awareness. A child can be strong in one and weaker in the other.

Which 11+ exams test verbal and non-verbal reasoning?

It depends on region and board. GL Assessment has four possible papers and regions mix them differently: the Kent Test and the Buckinghamshire test both include VR and NVR, as does the ISEB Common Pre-Test used by many independent schools. Essex CSSE and Chelmsford County High School for Girls' FSCE test include neither as a separate paper, and the Sutton SET is English and Maths only.

Is verbal or non-verbal reasoning harder?

Neither is inherently harder — it depends on the child. Strong readers with wide vocabulary often prefer verbal reasoning; visual thinkers often prefer non-verbal. Because they draw on different skills, progress in one doesn't automatically transfer, so practise them separately.

Can you improve at non-verbal reasoning, or is it fixed ability?

It improves with practice. NVR questions are built from a limited set of transformations — rotation, reflection, size, quantity, shading, adding or removing features. Once a child checks those categories systematically instead of guessing by appearance, accuracy and speed both rise. It's a learnable test skill.

How much time should we spend on reasoning versus English and Maths?

First check whether your target exam tests reasoning at all. If it doesn't — as with Essex CSSE — reasoning workbooks are low value and time is better spent on English and Maths. If it does, treat VR and NVR as real papers worth regular short practice, but not at the expense of core English and Maths fluency.

Does the old CEM format test reasoning?

Historically, CEM-style tests blended verbal ability (heavy on vocabulary), numerical reasoning and non-verbal reasoning into their papers rather than labelling separate subjects. CEM has since withdrawn from paper-based grammar school 11+ testing, so for most state grammar regions the reasoning you'll meet today is GL Assessment's.
